SHA re-opened the Downes Road Bridge over I-83 (Baltimore- Harrisburg Expressway) to all traffic Monday, October 24 following major bridge rehabilitation work.
The bridge, constructed in 1958, is structurally safe but needed deck replacement and other rehabilitation work to prolong its safe service life another 30-50 years.
This summer and fall, construction crews removed and replaced the concrete bridge deck (riding surface) and wing walls; repaired concrete abutments; and modified the shape of the piers.
Steel beam painting and other rehabilitation work will continue through late fall 2011.
There may be temporary single-lane closures on I-83 North at any time except between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; and along I-83 South at any time except between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.
The State’s contractor for the $1.3 million project is PDI-Sheetz Construction Corporation of Linthicum. The project will be complete late fall 2011, weather permitting.
Citizens who have questions about the project may contact the bridge project field office at 240-382-4844, toll-free at SHA’s District 4 Office in Hunt Valley at 1-866-998-0367 or by email at email@example.com.
