This weekend, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will add extra night work for two consecutive weekends as part of the $811,000 safety and resurfacing project on US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) between MD 410 (East West Highway) and Albion Road in University Park.
The single lane closures will occur over the next two weekends, overnight Friday, October 15 and Saturday, October 16 as well as Friday, October 22 and Saturday, October 23 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., weather permitting. The closures are necessary to give crews extra time for patching and grinding the existing pavement on US 1. The extra time will help crews complete the safety and resurfacing project before cold temperatures affect the ability to lay asphalt for the new road surface.
The ARRA funded resurfacing project on US 1 includes removing the top layer of asphalt and resurfacing the existing roadway. Other work includes cleaning and repairing existing storm drain inlets and pipes, replacing curb and gutters, and installing new pavement markings. The project improves the safety and ride quality for nearly 25,000 daily motorists and also improves access for pedestrians throughout the corridor. Over 3500 feet of sidewalk will be installed/replaced and sidewalk ramps will be upgraded as part of SHA’s commitment to ADA standards.
SHA will use variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.
